The CEO of Uber was this afternoon the guest of Bloomberg TV to talk about past performance, but also the future. Dara Khosrowshahi explained the company’s position on Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies. By accepting cryptos, will Uber pave the road to mass adoption?
Khorosrowshahi ready to accept Bitcoin?
We may be witnessing a short sequence that could mark a new turning point on the road to adoption of Bitcoin and crypto assets by the world’s largest companies. A significant shift, for the global economy as well as for Bitcoin. In an interview with Bloomberg TV, Dara Khosrowshahi was indeed asked about his position on “cryptos, the metaverse and Bitcoin”.
“Reporter: Do you have any internal discussions about this?
Khosrowshahi: Yes, clearly, we discuss it all the time. Bitcoin and some other cryptos have value as a safe haven. The exchange mechanism is still expensive, for the environment as well. As that mechanism evolves into a less and less expensive and more environmentally responsible model, I think you’ll see us looking at cryptos even more. And if what you’re trying to get me to say is “Will Uber accept cryptos in the future? Yes absolutely, eventually.”
So Uber’s CEO is stating his positions on Bitcoin and cryptos even more strongly than he did a year ago. He also admits that the subject is becoming more and more serious internally, almost daily. However, it is important to qualify these words, which could turn out to be as much a communication stunt as a way to test the reactions of the industry as well as the users of the service. However, the intrinsic value of Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies seems to be convincing more and more. It’s a safe bet that there will be no more debate on this subject in a few years.
