Whose bitcoins (BTC) have been dormant for eight years and have just moved? This curiosity about the identity of bitcoins that have been dormant for several years, actually misses other more important points and questions.
8 to 11 years of sleep: Dormant bitcoins to awaken in 2021
A wallet containing 321 BTC dormant since 2013, just reactivated. The value of these bitcoins has increased by nearly 2,300 times in eight years, from $6,594 to over $15 million.
The reawakening of a wallet that last recorded a transaction during the early years of bitcoin, always sparks interest in the cryptosphere. Some cryptophiles are bringing up the hypothesis that these bitcoins could belong to Satoshi Nakamoto.
The reactivation of this wallet after such a long sleep can also simply be explained by the fact that the owner of the wallet has found or remembered his seed phrase that allows him to access his bitcoins, after having misplaced or forgotten it.
2021 saw the reactivation of several inactive BTC wallets from 2010 to 2013. In January 2021, a wallet containing $5 million worth of bitcoins recorded transactions after being inactive since 2010. More recently, on December 19, 2021, an inactive address containing 235 BTC for nine years was reactivated.
Are we looking in vain for a new crypto to “hold”?
These dormant wallets and the amount of bitcoin they contain reveal other interesting facts:
- the crazy, but winning bet of future BTC whales: the first investors to bet on bitcoin became, thanks to their first few hundred or thousand dollar purchases, BTC whales
- HODler and not trader of bitcoin: these dormant wallets over several years also illustrate the value of bitcoin HODling, ignoring the transient corrections and crashes, but also the historic highs that have followed.
These dormant bitcoins pose another question in today’s cryptosphere: what other cryptocurrency should HODling be on par with bitcoin, or is bitcoin’s growth potential simply unique?
