The Onlyfans platform, known mostly for its adult content, will allow users to use an NFT as a profile picture.
New winning trio : Sex, Money and NFTs
Launched in September 2016 by two British brothers, OnlyFans had a very simple guideline.
It was to allow artists such as musicians, photographers or cooking coaches to share their content. In exchange they could set up a paid subscription, allowing subscribers full or limited access (depending on the subscription formula) to their content.
But soon OnlyFans became the king of pornographic content. The ease of access and the possibility of providing paid content literally made the platform’s reputation explode, transforming it into the kingdom of pornography. Very popular with amateur actors and actresses, the platform is known for its interest in new technologies and its constant evolution.
“Money is in every way like sex. You can’t stop thinking about it when you’re short of it, and you can’t stop thinking about something else when you have it.”
James Baldwin
Onlyfan, only on Ethereum
That’s why it will now be possible for all users to use an NFT as their profile picture. For now OnlyFans will only support NFTs created on the Ethereum blockchain.
They will be verified and marked with a specific icon to identify them as authentic.
The company said it will introduce NFT profile pictures in December 2021, without particularly communicating on the subject.
After Twitter, the fact that a new media “sharing” platform accepts NFTs shows that the shift has begun and that this trend will become more democratic.
Like Youtube, Netflix and Meta, the video platform believes that the future will come through NFTs and cryptocurrency exchange.
“Blockchain and NFTs can enable creators to build deeper relationships with their fans”
Youtube blog from February 10, 2022
Unlike the video game industry, which views NFT in a very negative light, the porn industry is very buoyant when it comes to cryptocurrencies and blockchain in general.
Indeed Onlyfans is not the first “pornographic” platform to put a foot in the ecosystem of cryptocurrencies. Pornhub has been accepting payment via several cryptos for years, and many other sites allow users to spend their bitcoins, some since 2014.
With the French of Pokmi allowing the purchase of NFTs from stars in the industry, or the famous Jacky and Michel launching their own cryptocurrency, the link between porn and cryptocurrencies is becoming closer and closer.
Whether it’s for porn platforms, video games or simply monkey heads, NFT will indeed be the phenomenon that will drive the year 2022.
