Are cryptocurrencies really all the rage in Hollywood? This actor known, among other things, for the iconic bullet dodging scenes in Matrix, couldn’t escape questions about cryptocurrencies.
Keenu Reeves and cryptocurrencies: a tentative entry into the Matrix
What if most of us are really connected to the Matrix without being aware of it. Keanu Reeves, aka Neo or Mr. Anderson to Agent Smith in the Matrix saga, is apparently a cryptocurrency HODler without knowing it.
The actor was interviewed by The Verge to promote the latest film in the Matrix series, “The Matrix Resurrections”. The topics discussed extended to the world of cryptocurrencies, touching on the issues of metavers, or the Matrix video game and NFTs.
Reeves said a friend bought him some crypto-currencies “a while back,” but that he didn’t touch them since he didn’t need them. The actor did not, however, give any details about these cryptocurrencies.
Neophyte in the cryptosphere: a little more metaverse than NFT
While Neo still seems to need Morpheus to accompany him into the world of cryptocurrencies, even Warners Bros is already particularly active in it. The studio has launched 100,000 NFTs, representing various movie-themed avatars, to promote the launch of “The Matrix Resurrections” in November 2021. Each NFT was sold for $50 and offered its holders the option of choosing between the famous red or blue pills from the film.
Just as Neo seemed to have trouble believing in his early days that he was the chosen one, Reeves was also skeptical about the NFTs. When asked about the issue of “economic scarcity” and “things that can’t be copied,” he added, certainly ironically, “they [NFTs] are easily replicated.”
The lead actor in a film that hypothesized that the virtual world is actually the one we all know, seems to have much more faith in the future of the metaverse:
“Can we avoid the metaverse being invented by Facebook? The concept of metaverse is much older than that.
The NFTs seem to be a must in the promotion of Hollywood productions such as “The Matrix Ressurections” or “Spider-Man: No Way Home”.
