After Tesla, it is the aeronautics company SpaceX that will accept Dogecoin (DOGE) as a means of payment through its website. The announcement, made by Elon Musk via Twitter, has unsurprisingly caused the memecoin price to rise momentarily.
SpaceX will soon accept Dogecoin (DOGE)
The richest man in the world continues to show interest in Dogecoin (DOGE). Yesterday, Elon Musk announced that his aerospace company SpaceX will soon accept DOGE as a payment method within its online store, following the example of Tesla, which has been accepting it since January.
And the possibilities of paying with DOGE could go even further, according to the multi-billionaire. When asked by an Internet user if it will eventually be possible to pay for his Starlink subscription with memecoin, Musk replied “maybe one day”.
Unsurprisingly, as with Elon Musk’s previous statements about cryptocurrencies, the DOGE price saw a momentary spike. In the space of half an hour, the cryptocurrency saw its price rise from $0.078 to $0.09, an increase of just over 15%.
The rise was very brief, however, without much surprise, as the market has been generally flat for 2 weeks now, hovering around the symbolic $30,000.
For comparison, when Elon Musk had announced that Tesla would accept DOGE last December, the memecoin price had climbed 33%.
Heading to the moon for the DOGE
Elon Musk has a rather peculiar opinion on DOGE, memecoin which, as the name suggests, was originally a simple joke… which ended up spiraling out of control to the point of occupying 10th place on the crypto-currency podium, with over $11 billion in market capitalization.
Indeed, in an interview with Time Magazine back in January, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX had stated that DOGE was superior to Bitcoin (BTC) due to its higher transaction rate.
It is also worth noting that after accepting Bitcoin as a payment method at Tesla, Elon Musk eventually reversed his decision, arguing that the largest cryptocurrency on the market was too energy intensive. A point that is actually against the ideology of the billionaire, one of whose leitmotivs is to reduce the energy consumption of humans.
In May 2021, the self-proclaimed “Dogefather” had also declared that if Dogecoin multiplied its block completion speed by 10, increased its block size by 10 and reduced its transaction fees by 100, then it would beat Bitcoin “hands down.”
Let’s also remember that SpaceX has plans to send the DOGE “to the moon” – literally – in the near future. Indeed, the aerospace company has planned to send a miniature satellite into orbit to collect lunar and space data. The operation will be called “DOGE-1”.
