Comic book fans rejoice: iconic DC Comics characters will soon be available as physical trading cards, which unlock access to non-fungible tokens (NFTs). All of this will be offered on Immutable X, an Ethereum second layer (ETH) solution.
DC Comics trading cards associated with NFTs
As announced by Warner Bros, which owns the rights to DC Comics, this new initiative relies on a partnership with Cartamundi Group for the “physical” cards. Each pack will range in price from $5 to $120, and the cards will of course have different levels of rarity.
The novelty is that each card will be associated with a non-fungible token (NFT). It is therefore a hybrid model that is offered to collectors. The latter will be able to install the Hro application, in order to prove that they have the physical cards, and thus recover the DC Comics NFT in question.
According to Pam Lifford, who manages this project for Warner Bros, this association is particularly interesting for collectors:
“Trading cards have excited fans for decades. Combining that enthusiasm with an NFT is a brilliant idea, and this program brings the DC brand to fans in a new way.”
A project that relies on Immutable X
Notably, Warner Bros and DC Comics have chosen the Immutable X scalability solution for this project. This is a second-layer blockchain, which improves the scalability of the Ethereum (ETH) network, including reducing transaction fees.
DC Comics had already offered NFT last year, during the DC Fandome event. At the time, the brand had used Palm, an Ethereum sidechain from ConsenSys dedicated to NFTs.
We also note that the brand had shown its teeth when faced with artists who wanted to distribute their own non-fungible tokens. Last September, it had thus forbidden DC Comics artists to sell NFTs inspired by its universe. The NFT Batman, Wonder Woman & co will be reserved to a distribution controlled by Warner Bros. Business is business…
