With a tweet on July 27, Burger King Brazil announced that it accepts Dogecoin (DOGE) for a specific product for dogs, DOGPPERS. Is this a sign of Burger King’s more global acceptance of cryptocurrencies?
A new major company accepts Dogecoin as a form of payment
A few months after Latvian national airline airBaltic, another company has just announced that it accepts Dogecoin (DOGE) as a form of payment. And this time, the company is a multinational known worldwide since it is the American fast food chain Burger King. It was through a tweet on July 27, a little unnoticed, that this announcement was made.
Acceptance of Dogecoin limited to a single country… for a single product
This acceptance of Dogecoin as a means of payment did not make much of a splash, even though it comes from a major company. This is not surprising when you look at the information in more detail. Indeed, we can see that this acceptance is only valid for one country, Brazil. So don’t expect to pay your menu in Dogecoin in France. Above all, and this is perhaps the most important information, this acceptance is only valid for one product.
This product is the DOGPPER, which is nothing else but a… dog treat. The name is a nod to the chain’s most popular product, WHOPPER. Although this information is therefore more anecdotal than anything else, it is still a nice publicity stunt for the cryptocurrency DOGE and Burger King. This DOGPPER will be sold at a price of 3 DOGE.
To purchase DOGPPERS in DOGE, customers will need to select the number of treats on the Burger King website, for a maximum of five per order. At the time of payment, the customer will only need to indicate Dogecoin as the payment method and Burger King Brazil’s public address will appear.
Burger King Brazil also announced that part of the proceeds from the DOGPPERS will be donated to a Brazilian animal protection NGO.
Will this acceptance convert Burger King to cryptocurrencies?
Although this information is not a revolution in the world of cryptocurrencies, does it reveal the first step of an acceptance of cryptocurrencies as a payment method by Burger King? On the face of it, we’re not there yet.
For one thing, DOGPPER has nothing to do with Burger King’s other flagship products. It is a limited offer that is not intended to last and is not available in all Burger King stores in Brazil. On the other hand, the DOGPPER can also be paid with Brazilian real, the official currency of Brazil.
It would therefore be more of an advertising operation with the particularity of accepting a crypto-currency as payment. It should therefore not be extended to another product or another country. Burger King has never communicated its interest in accepting Bitcoin (BTC) as a means of payment.
