Brave is a web browser that pays its users when they see ads. Thanks to this innovative concept, the browser attracts over 42 million monthly users. Now, Brave wants to take on the giant Metamask head on by unveiling a wallet natively integrated into the browser.
The problem with wallet extensions
In recent years, cryptocurrency holders have always been a prime target for malicious hackers. Their goal: to siphon off your entire wallet before you know it.
To do this, they have various methods at their disposal. The first and simplest method consists in pushing you to give them your seed phrase, in particular by pretending to be the MetaMask support, as was the case last May during a phishing wave.
The second method is to modify your wallet. When this is done, the attacker can arrange for you to sign transactions intended for him by mistake. This attack vector is particularly effective for MetaMask users. Indeed, the fragility of the latter lies in its nature as a browser extension, it is indeed easier to make changes if access to the hardware is possible.
Brave’s solution
On Tuesday, November 16, the Brave browser teams announced the launch of Brave Wallet. In practice, Brave Wallet is a browser-native wallet, so it is not an extension like MetaMask.
“Unlike most cryptocurrency wallets, Brave Wallet does not require extensions; it is browser-native, reducing security risks and reliance on additional CPU and memory.”
The announcement
The wallet will initially be limited to browser users on computers, although a mobile version is planned for the coming months.
Brave Wallet will allow interaction with all so-called “EVM Compatibles” blockchains, namely Ethereum, BSC or Polygon to name a few.
“Brave Wallet supports all EVM-compatible chains (Polygon, xDai, Avalanche, etc.) and L2s, and unlike other wallet extensions, Brave Wallet is built with an open MPL license, allowing developers to make contributions easily.”
The announcement
In addition, the wallet will offer an integrated swap service that will “find the best price match against a list of vendors.”
Brave Wallet will also be available on the Solana blockchain in 2022. This follows the partnership between the two projects, announced at Solana Breakpoint.
