As we strongly suspected, the rumors of an Amazon accepting payments in bitcoins (BTC) were quite adulterated. Nevertheless, the global e-commerce giant is once again expressing its keen interest in the cryptocurrency sector.
Fake rumors after a recruitment announcement
In recent days, the publication – quite real, it – of a job offer by Amazon, for a “Digital Currencies and Blockchain Product Manager” has led to various rather crazy rumors in the crypto community.
Among these was a British newspaper called CityAM, which claimed to have an anonymous source, one of those insiders, who explained that Amazon was ready to allow payments in BTC and other crytocurrencies.
This ghost even claimed that a token of its own, a sort of “AmazonCoin”, was on the way. Moreover, all these projects would be initiatives of Jeff Bezos himself, the founder of Amazon.
Bitcoin on Amazon: it’s not going to happen soon
After a period of excitement, as reported by CoinDesk, an Amazon spokesperson has completely denied the information published in CityAM:
“Without questioning our interest in the [crypto] sector, the speculation that has proliferated around our specific plans for cryptocurrencies [ed. note: hiring a project manager] is not true.”
Still, the Amazon spokesperson added to his comment by explaining that the multinational “remains focused on exploring” what accepting crypto assets might look like for customers shopping on Amazon.
While payments in bitcoin and other cryptos are officially not on the agenda for now, the word “never” was not uttered. On the contrary! Connections between Amazon and the cryptosphere, especially with Ethereum, are growing. We may end up with good news one day, but it won’t be today.
